What are the Worst Foods and Drinks that can Trigger (Heartburn) Acid Reflux Symptoms during Pregnancy?

Are you wondering why do some foods make you restless after eating? Do you want to get rid of heartburn fast? Then finding out the list of foods that trigger acid reflux symptoms during your pregnancy can be helpful for you.

The stomach is a very sensitive organ in the body, it is easily affected by several things during day and night. If you neglect such fact you will be exposed to stomach complications, the most prominent among them is the very painful burning sensation (heartburn). We already mentioned in previous post, heartburn relief during pregnancy, about causes and side effects of heartburn such as losing appetite, losing temper and sometimes suffering more from morning sickness. Experts recommend avoiding foods and drinks that cause indigestion and weaken the valve of the esophagus.

Chocolate: It might be a very bad news for you in case you are craving chocolate. Chocolate is high in fats and contains cacao and caffeine, those three cause acid reflux.

High Fat Dairy Products: The low pH scale in some dairy products enhances oxidation. In other words triggers acid reflux, especially the high-fat dairy products such as butter, regular cottage cheese, processed cheese, ice cream, Ice milk and milk shake. Add to the list the creamed food (creamy mashed potato and creamy salad dressing).

Processed Baked Goods: Brownies and high-fat butter cookies are packed with artificial preservatives that cause acidity. Therefore, try to avoid all forms of processed baked goods, refined white sugar and enriched flour that have a very low pH scale.

Soft Drinks: Soft drinks (soda) contain carbonated water, artificial flavoring and sometimes caffeine. The gas emitted from soft drinks increase the stomach pressure and forces the esophageal muscle to remain opened which exacerbates the problem of acid reflux. Not to forget to mention that sugar free soft drinks are the worst.

Fried Food/Greasy Food: Fried food slow down the digestive process, leaving excess acids moving upward into the esophagus. Burgers, french fries, hot dog, pizza and potato chips are at the top of the blacklist of foods with too many calories and too little nutrition.

Alcohol: Alcoholic beverages are very acidic, they cause chronic heartburn and serious damage to your stomach. That is why you are asked to stop alcohol during pregnancy and after delivery.

High Fat Meat: High fat meat are more challenging to digest, they remain stuck in the digestive process for longer periods of time, making augmented pressure in the stomach.

Caffeine: Coffee or any caffeinated drinks cause heartburn by relaxing the stomach lining. And what is worse is the decaffeinated coffee by its irritating oils and mixtures that are more acidic than that of the coffee.

Vinegar: Vinegar consists mainly of acetic acid and water. Therefore, you should avoid food with vinegar because they will be containing acid. Such as Pickled cucumber and vinegar salad dressings.

Smoked Food: Smoked food is deadlier than liquor. They not only cause indigestion and acid reflux, but also cancer due to the charcoal and smoke residue being absorbed by the food cooked directly over fire.

Fruits: Blueberries, canned or glazed fruits, cranberries, currants, plums and prunes are very acidic and they upset your stomach when you digest them.

Sauces: Especially the sauces that contain vinegar, mustard, spices, tomato and smoked liquid cause heartburn such as sweet and sour, soy and BBQ sauce.

Spices and Herbs: Hot and spicy food aggravate reflux. Such spices are cayenne, pepper, hot pepper, curry, cinnamon, mustard, chili, and nutmeg. Herbs such as rosemary, thyme, dill, cilantro or coriander, peppermint, spearmint and oregano. It is true that seasoning is very important for flavoring food but try to avoid during pregnancy.

Tomato: There are plenty of tomato products as food and beverages such as sauce, salsa, soup, gravy chutney and juice. Tomato increases the acid production in stomach. Therefore, you have to avoid eating meals with tomato such as chili, ketchup, pizza and spaghetti with marinara sauce.

Citrus: Citrus is a common term for flower plants of rue family such as sweet and bitter Orange, tangerine, grape fruit, mandarin, Persian lime, cranberry, lemonade, pomelo and lemons originated. These juices increase a type of acid called “stearic acid” in stomach which triggers acid reflux.

Garlic and Onion: Raw Onion increases the PH which leads to increase acidity in stomach, heartburn and burp. The cooked onion has less effect on acidity than raw onion. In case you were obliged to use onion in food, then replace the raw onion by scallion (green onion) or leek. Garlic is the same issue, therefore try to eliminate garlic from your current diet and replace it with different herbs for flavoring.

Finally, cure your heartburn by changing your diet and avoiding acidic foods, fattening foods, and caffeine. Replace these foods that trigger acid reflux symptoms, by foods that fight heartburn during pregnancy.
